I have been out for the last couple of weeks trying to practice what I preach.
It’s always a good exercise in humility, finding out that I am still not the master of my foibles. Seeing all my bigotry and hatred, my prejudice and judgments, that are buried just deep enough so I don’t get to see them very often. But they are there and I must admit my ownership of them, to bring them out into the open. Because no matter what I say or do, the world has it’s own way and all I can do is pray, work hard and believe that I can make a difference, that I can make the change.
I actually love this concept. A while back, my friend Nichiren, told me of a thought he had regarding religion. It was that enlightenment, can come today. The rapture can come today. Moshiach can come today. We need not wait until the afterlife to have the life that god promises.
It’s a great thought, one that I think I shall borrow politely (and of course give credit for). Why should we wait for enlightenment? Hell, why should we wait to be saved? You can of course, be ritualistically saved, but is that the same thing?
Damn, I love the way that sounds. It’s like some great piece of sushi that you can order from your local chef. “I would like some Unagi, an order of Hamachi and while you’re at it bring me a plate of Shakabuku”.
You see Nichiren thought (as Jesus did) that man was ultimately free to be anything he chose to be, Not bound by the laws of the religions of the day.
Be a holy man. Be the savior. Be the Messiah. Just be.
This is a term that has many meanings and become a bit of cultural jargon. But the things I like about it are, the spreading of the word of god through personal experience, and not just through the act of ritual. And that the nature of the world can change if enough people practice it. (Don’t believe me? Just look at the Tea Party. A sad example of what was a small group of people who under the false pretense of defending god have become the one of the most powerful forces in our democracy.)
I think it is marvelous that by simply talking about your truth of god to someone else, you can change the world. No ridiculous rituals, nor promises that can never be fulfilled by corporate holy men, turned out by the corporation of the church. (Whichever one is closest to you).
And the real truth of god is, how he makes you feel. Are you angry? Are you fed up? Are you happy, sad, mad, insane, jealous, in love, passé? Whatever you are is divine.
Spread the word of god in all of its forms and change the way we think of god.
Bring him off of the cross.
Bring him out of the holy books.
Bring him out of the temples and scriptures,
Bring him out of the trees and hills.
Bring him into your hearts and allow him to manifest inside of you.
This is the true meaning of shakabuku.
